(Part 1) COPING WITH TOUGH TIMES

COPING WITH TOUGH TIMES

TEXT:   PS. 102:2-7

  1. One of the best things that can happen to any child of Adam on this planet earth is the salvation of his or her soul.
    1. After salvation, we are expected to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our lord and saviour Jesus Christ.
    2. We are expected to serve the lord in spirit and in truth.
    3. It is not always easy to serve the living God, a holy God in spirit and in truth, but it is possible.
    4. In the course of serving him, you must be prepared to meet with good and difficult times.
    5. Don’t ever allow yourself to be deceived by anyone who may be bold to tell you that if you serve God you will not have any problem at all.
    6. If you serve God, there will be automatic solutions to all your problems in life.
    7. You will be free from trials and temptations of life.
    8. The devil will not come near you in any way.
    9. You will not suffer in any way nor lack anything.

  1. This can be a fine and popular preaching, but it cannot be regarded as the whole truth.
    1. The bible is still saying: Many are the afflictions or troubles of the righteous, but the lord delivereth him out of them all-Ps. 34:19.
    2. James says: My brethren count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations (James 1:3-5).
    3. Peter says: “For even here unto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example that ye should follow his steps” (1 peter 2:21).
    4. James says again: “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the lord hath promised to them that love him” (James 1:12).
    5. It is clear from the scriptures that serving God and serving him faithfully does not exempt us from having problems or tough times.
    6. The devil does not fear you to the point that he will not do his job.
    7. It is his business to tempt you, oppose you, cause you hard time, frustrate you and if possible derail you from the faith infact, as a child of God or a minister of the gospel, you are a choice target of satanic attacks.
    8. But it is also your God given privilege or responsibility to resist him.

  1. Going back to our text, you will agree that those verses powerfully captured the physical, emotional, spiritual and mental state of a child of God or a minister in the midst of tough times.
    1. Tough times are difficult or hard times, when conditions are harsh and circumstances adverse.
    2. In the ministry or in the faith, you can experience tough times in different directions.
    3. It can be: spiritual, financial, moral, physical, emotional, mental and even environmental tough times.
    4. These 7 areas can be read into our text as quoted above and also from Rom. 8:35: “ who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?”
    5. Hard times affect us in two ways:
    6. It In all cases, it is not what happens to you that matters, but how you respond to what happens to you.
    7. Your response to tough times will determine your height with God and man.
    8. Robert schuler has written the book: ‘Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do to show us that we do not have to wither like grass when tough times come. Rather, we should tighten up our partnership with God so that nothing should be impossible for us.
